Ellen Warkentine plays traditional jazz and creates untraditional music theatre.

Ellen performs traditional jazz on clarinet, voice, and piano, currently performing with The Naughty Doings, an LA-based trad jazz band. She began a monthly residency and jam session at Young Ethel’s in Park Slope with her Brooklyn-based collective The Small Dog Jazz Society.

Recent notable gigs include playing with the swing dance group The Findyhoppers at The Coney Island Mermaid Parade, and for a swing dance event at the prestigious Salmagundi Club in Manhattan.

Ellen holds an MA in immersive music theatre from Gallatin NYU. Her melodic theatrical work is inspired by avant-pop and early jazz. Her most recent production, “Nin Descending a Staircase,” (2023) was a site-specific immersive adaptation of the works of Anaïs Nin staged in the historic site of Nin’s old printing press in Greenwich Village. Ellen is a long-time collaborator with the award-winning “junkyard opera” company Four Larks Theatre. She is co-creator and composer of the absurd “fauxpera” LOLPERA and has written music and music directed for Kinetic Cabaret Productions, 7 Stages Theatre in Atlanta, Sacred Fools, The Garage Theatre, The Long Beach Playhouse, Upright Citizens Brigade, and Four Clowns, among others.

Ellen is also a writer of songs, noveltyeducational, and otherwise. She is a proud teaching artist who has spent 15 years serving communities of LAUSD.
